Dr Haiqing Liu, an associate professor of ASIPP won the 16th Anhui Youth Science and Technology Award for his “achievements and potential in scientific and technological innovation”.

Graduating from Kyushu University, Liu has been researching on far infrared laser diagnostics and plasma confinement in Tokamak, including density behaviors, particle transport and optimization of current distribution. The EAST Polarimeter / Interferometer system, providing reasonable plasma density and current density profiles, is the key diagnosis in realizing advanced operation. As the main executor, Liu developed this system through international cooperation with Professor W. X. Ding and professor D. L. Brower in UCLA. He completed the ITER project of “Diagnosis of advanced current density distribution”, and was voted as a committee member of the 17th International Symposium on Laser-Aided Plasma Diagnostics, becoming the first Chinese member in this committee.

Established by Anhui provincial government, the Youth S&T Award aims to encourage and advocate scientific and technological innovation of young researchers. With the staff average age at 32, ASIPP encourages young researchers to develop international cooperation with oversea institutes. In recent two years, young scientists (under 35 years old) took up approximately 50% and 80% in short-term and long-term international exchange respectively. (Lan Ting reports)
