More than 70 scientists and students from China and Germany met for four days from November 6 to 9 in Dalian City, China to introduce their plasma wall interactions research programs, share their research results, and discuss bilateral cooperation projects at the Third Sino-German Workshop on Plasma-wall Interactions (PWI). Co-organized by Prof Luo Guangnan, ASIPP and Dr Karl Krieger, IPP, this series of PWI workshops has been sponsored by Sino-German Center for Research Promotion for three consecutive times.

At the opening ceremony, Dr Zhao Miaogen, German Deputy Director, Sino-German Center for Research Promotion (the Center), extended a warm welcome to all participants, and introduced programs and management of the Center. Following Dr Zhao, Prof Li Jiangang gave a talk on recent EAST experiment progress. The rest time was devoted to talks on six topics: sputtering, erosion and deposition; fuel retention and wall conditioning; particle and energy control; PWI and wall surface diagnostics; SOL transport and simulation; plasma-facing materials and components. On the last day, the participants visited laboratories of Dalian University.

Although the workshop has been held annually since 2009, in China and Germany by rotation, scientists from both sides have decided that the workshop be held biennially from next year. However, “this will not shrink the research cooperation and personal exchanges”, says Prof Luo Guangnan, “we will see more intensive exchanges in the next three or four years with financial support from the Sino-German Center for Research Promotion.”

This September Sino-German Center for Research Promotion approved four joint Sino-German research projects in the field of plasma-wall interaction (PWI), will provide about 4 million Yuan to this three-year bilateral cooperation.
