Prof Wan Baonian has been named director of Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP). Zhou Shiping, head of Division of Personnel and Education, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, CAS (CASHIPS) made the announcement Thursday, September 18.

Taking the helm from LI Jiangang, WAN begins his new role as ASIPP’s 8th director since it was established in 1978.

"I am grateful for the trust of leaders and colleagues," WAN said. "I look forward to working together with my colleagues for a better future for China magnetic fusion research.”

Wan has been working in ASIPP for thirty-two years. Prior to being named director, he served as deputy director with the responsibility of leading EAST experiment and student education.

In his not-exactly-could-be-called “farewell” speech, Li Jiangang first congratulated Baonian and other newly-appointed deputies, then thanked deputy directors, middle-level management, and fellow colleagues for their steady-fast support to himself during his 12-year tenure. Talking of his plan after step-down, LI said he will stay “in the institute” doing research and teaching students. (Shaohua reports)
