On the 8th day of May in the year 2023, the grand inauguration of the Pilot Programme for Open Innovation (PPOI) took place amidst a significant conference that was hosted in the city of Hefei, situated in the heart of China. This particular initiative, known as the PPOI, is set to concentrate its efforts on the realm of magnetic confinement fusion energy research. The overarching goal of this program is to establish an open innovation ecosystem that is not only robust but also capable of competing on a global scale.

To achieve this ambitious objective, the PPOI intends to leverage the capabilities of major scientific facilities such as the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). By doing so, the program aspires to forge deeper collaborative ties with an extensive network of over 120 research institutions, hailing from more than 40 different countries across the globe. This impressive list of international partners includes the prestigious ITER international organization, which stands as a beacon of international scientific collaboration in the field of fusion energy research.

The official launch of the PPOI serves as a powerful testament to the Chinese Academy of Sciences' (CAS) unwavering dedication to the cause of advancing international scientific cooperation. Furthermore, this initiative underscores CAS's resolute commitment to championing the principles of open innovation. As the PPOI embarks on its journey, it holds the promise of not only propelling scientific progress but also fostering an environment where knowledge and expertise can be freely exchanged, ultimately benefiting humanity as a whole.
