Professor J. Li Won the Helmholtz International Fellow Award 2015

Professor Jiangang Li, former director of ASIPP received the Helmholtz International Fellow Award of 2015 for his “outstanding scientific achievements”, the third Chinese scientist who ever won the award. 

Li received the Award from Dr Jurgen Mlynek, president of Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH on 11th September in Juelich. In the award ceremony. Li expressed his “deep gratitude and great honor” and announced his decision to donate the €20,000 prize money to the youth exchange and cooperation between FZJ and ASIPP.  

The Helmholtz International Fellow Award was established to build cooperation with the world’s best researchers. It targets outstanding senior scientists and research managers based outside Germany who have excelled in fields relevant to the Helmholtz Association, including science management at large international research institutions. 

The quality of the candidates' research is the most important criterion for the award. Prof Jiangang Li became director of ASIPP in 2001, leading an institute of approximately 500 people engaged in thermonuclear fusion, fusion technology and engineering, plasma physics and its application, superconductivity, solar cell and ITER project. During his 13-year term as director, ASIPP achieved great success on EAST and built wide cooperation with international institutions. Prof Li is a member of European Fusion Facility Review Panel, an ITER Council (IC) member, a member of Technology Advisory Group (TAG) of ITER project. He was named chairman of China Nuclear Fusion Experts Committee in 2011. (Yingkun Xi reports)
