Supported by Sino-German Center for Research Promotion, hosted by Julich research center (FZJ), the 4th Sino-German workshop on Plasma-wall Interactions (PWI) in fusion devices was held at Julich, Germany, May 26 to 28, 2015. Together with 5 other representatives from ASIPP, Prof. Guangnan Luo, the co-organizer, attended this workshop.

More than 40 Chinese and Germany scientists/attendees gave oral presentations during the workshop, which cover the hot topics like advanced materials for fusion reactor, erosion and deposition of first wall materials, fuel retention in tungsten, material morphology change caused by high heatload, laser diagnostic and mirrors, particle and power control in tokamak device, plasma and material transport modeling.

Five joint Sino-German research projects had already been approved as a result of the previous three Sino-German Workshops on PWI. The projects promoted the development of PWI modelling, plasma-tungsten interaction, advanced tungsten and laser wall diagnostics in both sides. The scientists in this workshop also took a further exchange and discussion on the preparation of new joint project application.

New collaboration will be concentrated on R&D of advanced first wall material, wall diagnostics in tokamak, first mirror experiment, laser based spectroscopies for tokamak and linear machine, exposure of tungsten to high heat flux and H/He beam, code validation and application in tokamak and linear machine. Furthermore, the participants suggested both sides to enhance personnel exchange and organize summer school to promote the development of young scientists.

It has been decided that the next Sino-German workshop will be held in Chengdu, China and hosted by Southwestern Institute of Physics (SWIP) in 2017. (DING Fang reports)
