Dr. Francesco Romanelli, leader of EFDA and JET, paid a visit to ASIPP and gave a lecture on the “ambitious yet realistic” European fusion roadmap on Jan. 28.
The visit began with an introduction made by Prof. Li Jiangang, director of ASIPP, to the present state and future plan of EAST as well as to the role of ASIPP in ITER. Dr. Romanelli showed great interest in the progress achieved by ASIPP and discussed with Prof. Li on detailed issues concerning materials, education, collaboration with European fusion communities, etc..
After a lab tour guided by Prof Li, Dr. Romanelli delivered a lecture in the afternoon on the European roadmap to the realization of fusion energy, which has been published by EFDA recently. He elaborated on the eight specific missions which comprise the roadmap to fusion electricity by 2050, including plasma operation, heat exhaust, materials, tritium breeding, safety, DEMO, low cost and stellarator. He concluded his lecture by saying that the roadmap will be “a living document”, to be reviewed when needed.
In his presentation, Dr. Romanelli reiterated the importance of international cooperation, cooperation between European members and with non-EU partners, such as ASIPP.
