Prof. Li Jiangang, director of ASIPP and Prof. Richard van de Sanden, general director of FOM-DIFFER (Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Jan. 11 to intensify scientific and technical cooperation in basic studies of plasma physics and controlled nuclear fusion, in particular in the context of ITER and DEMO.

The MoU was signed during a visit of FOM-DIFFER delegation to ASIPP. According to the MoU, the institutes will collaborate on various areas including the study of plasma-surface interaction, the operation and development on edge and divertor diagnostics, and the operation of core diagnostics for use on EAST, JET, ASDEX and ITER.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by David Pho, Science Attaché at the Dutch Embassy in Beijing and representatives from both institutes. Mr. Pho also gave a presentation earlier that day on "Funding Possibilities for China-Netherlands Collaborations", which, according to Prof. Li, was "the first speech ever delivered by a foreign diplomat in the institute".

The three-day visit began on Jan. 10 with a welcome speech by Prof. Luo Guangnan, and followed by three lectures presented by Prof. van de Sanden, Dr Greg de Temmerman, and Dr Tony Donne. The guests were then guided by Prof. Li on a lab tour to EAST, NBI, Cryogenics Hall, superconductivity lab, ITER CICC, and ITER CC later that day. (Peng Yujie reports)
