Yes, we may not be able to sit at the annual meeting of James Clerk Maxwell Prize in Plasma Physics held in Providence, Rhode Island, October 29 - November 2, 2012, but we can still have a chance to meet the winner at ASIPP. Prof. Chen Liu, who has just been awarded the 2012 James Clerk Maxwell Prize in Plasma Physics visited ASIPP and gave us a wonderful talk entitled “ On Nonlinear Physics of Shear Alfv´en Waves” on November 10, 2012.

Although Prof Chen’s talk was on Saturday, the 150-seat No. 601 meeting room was fully occupied by our young researchers from ASIPP and USTC. The long-expected report also attracted Academicians Wan Yuanxi and Yu Chanxuan, Prof Li Jiangang, ASIPP director, and Prof Wang Xiaogang of Beijing University. At the start, Prof. Wan Baonian, deputy director of ASIPP ,extended a warm welcome and congratulations to Prof. Chen. In his report, Prof. Chen talked about his work and also highlighted several hot issues in the field. When discussing with young scientists after the report, Prof. Chen said “I truly encourage our young guys to develop a way of thinking---the reversed thinking. The deeper you are involved in plasma physics, the more interesting things you will find in it.” (Zhao Dan reports)
