A meeting was organized in Beijing on August 23 – 25 to review the research progress of the national “973” “Basic Research on Highly-Efficient, Low-Cost, Novel Thin-Film Photovoltaic Materials and Devices” project (“973” Solar project). Five top experts and officials from Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) were invited to form the advisory committee to give independent reviews.

Project chief scientist Prof Dai Songyuan, ASIPP hosted the meeting. At the meeting, Dr. Jinding Yan from the MOST introduced the main tasks of the meeting. Prof. Dai introduced the background, main tasks, and mid-term goals of the project. Then the key persons of nine sub-projects gave reports on the research progress. Participants had deep discussions on problems existing in the project and sub-projects. The advisory committee made constructive suggestions on project’s organization and the further work plan adjustment.

Two sub-projects named “Mechanism, module technology and its application in dye-sensitized solar cell” and “Exploratory research of novel solar cell structures”, shouldered by ASIPP, got a thumb-up from the advisory committee.

Now, the project team, consisting of researchers from 16 institutes, labs and universities, are getting ready to meet the official evaluation organized by MOST, to be held in September. (Fantai Kong Reports)

Background:

National Basic Research Program is abbreviated to “973” program, because the program was started in March, 1997. Under the 973 program, there are many project categories; the major-scientific-issue-orientated project is one of them. “Basic Research on Highly-Efficient, Low-Cost, Novel Thin-Film Photovoltaic Materials and Devices” project is the only one in energy area that is supported by 973 major-scientific-issue-orientated project.
