PPPL Contributes to EAST Diagnostics

Dr. Manfred Bitter and Dr. Kenneth Hill of Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) paid a two-week visit to ASIPP upon invitation of Professor Baonian Wan, deputy director of ASIPP from February 11th.  The purpose of their visit is to further the cooperation on the development of X-ray crystal spectrometers on EAST. It is their fourth visit to ASIPP since 2007 for ASIPP-PPPL cooperation program.

　  During their stay in Hefei, Drs. Bitter and Hill worked closely with ASIPP counterparts and installed a two-crystal-on-one-substrate assembly on the poloidal X-ray crystal spectrometer for the first time. The spectrometer allows the measurement of both helium-like and hydrogen-like spectra using a single detector.  The new-added capability will provide more information on satellite spectra and the related atomic physics. The visitors also proposed potential future cooperative activities on the deployment and flexible usage of the high-throughput X-ray detector for metal impurity spectra.　

　  Development of X-ray crystal spectrometers for EAST is one of 19 cooperation areas between ASIPP and PPPL. The outcome on this area cooperation is outstanding: Two spectrometers, which exclusively provide the measurement of ion temperature and plasma rotation velocity, have been developed and installed, they are running on EAST now. One of the next step collaboration will be focused on the improvement of the current spectrometers. (Lv Bo Reports)
