Prof. Donald Lee Hillis, head of Experimental Plasma Physics Group in Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), with Mr.William McGinnis and Mr.Steve Meitner made a ten-day visit to ASIPP during mid-December. The purpose of this visit is to apply the filterscope spectroscopy diagnostics on the forthcoming EAST experiment. Prof. Wu Zhenwei as ASIPP cooresponding researcher worked with them.

Filterscope spectroscopy has been initially used for H spectra and edge impurity line radiation diagnostics; now it’s extended to studies on H mode, divertor and edge plasma physics of present major tokamaks, e.g. DIII-D in General Atomics, USA. When installed on EAST Takamak, this diagnostic technology will provide fine structure measurement and physical analysis for high performance H-mode and various edge local modes (ELMs) as well as giving reliable experiment data of H spectra and edge impurity line radiation in long-pulse discharge.

Prof. Hillis and Prof. Wu together finished the work of design, installation, absolute optical positioning and in-situ absolute calibration of the filterscope diagnostic system before EAST vacuum chamber’s sealing. Both sides are very satisfied with present progress and plan to make further collaboration on the studies of plasma diagnostics, divertor and edge plasma physics. (Yang Ying and Liu Xiaoju Reports)
