Little Person, Big Achievement

Mr Guodong Sheng, a Ph.D student, short and "displeasing to the eye" in his own word, is hard to be spotted among a group of graduate students. Yet, it is this a little shy twenty-seven young man that makes the institute proud: his two articles have landed in the 2010 list of “Top 100 Most Cited Chinese Papers Published in International Journals”, competing with 121,500 papers published in SCI international journals by Chinese first author.

　  According to the list of "Top 100 Most Cited Chinese Papers Published in International Journals" in 2010, announced by Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China, Mr Sheng’s two papers are: Adsorption of copper(II) on multiwalled carbon nanotubes in the absence and presence of humic or fulvic acids, Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2010, 178, 333-340; Kinetics and thermodynamics of adsorption of ionizable aromatic compounds from aqueous solutions by as-prepared and oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes, Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2010, 178, 505-516.

　  "This is really an extraordinary recognition", says Prof Xiangke Wang, Mr Sheng’s supervisor, given that Mr Sheng’s is the only person whose two papers have been selected into this high academic honor list at the same time in one year, the only case in the listing history.

　  As a Ph.D student in the third year in his Ph.D. study, Mr Guodong Sheng has authored and published 10 papers as the first writer in international important journals such as in "Environmental Science & Technology", "Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta", "Journal of Hazardous Materials", "Science China Chemistry" etc, and their total impact factor is about 25.

　  "Calm", said Mr Sheng, when asked of his first response at the good news, jokingly and smilingly, "it is like sunlight from God on my unhandsome face". "With honor at hand, one must put it aside, quiet down and continue hard-working", Mr Sheng added. (Yang Shitong Reports)

　  2010 "Top 100 Most Cited Chinese Papers Published in International Journals" are sifted from 121,500 papers published in SCI international journals by the first author from China. The selection is based on criteria, such us, whether the research is frontier or hot area, whether the research result is new and/or important, what is the journal academic level, and the article citations, etc.
